Crocheting hats for kids is one of the most popular things to make. When the weather starts getting cooler it’s so fun to crochet up a few hats to have on hand for your kids. At the bottom of this post, you’ll find the free crochet kids hat pattern. I’ve included sizes for 0-3 months up to kids.
Free Crochet Kids Hat Pattern
The Chunky Cobblestone Beanie is made with #6 super bulky yarn. I love using chunky yarn for kids hats because it keeps them extra warm and the hat is super fast to whip up. The Bernat Beyond Yarn that I chose is sooooo soft. It has all the softness of acrylic but still the stitch definition of cotton. If you haven’t tried this yarn yet I’d recommend it!
I love the texture of this kid’s hat. It’s created by using the herringbone stitch. You can get all the details below. Typically you crochet the herringbone stitch back in forth in rows. But when you continue to crochet in the round without turning you get this bumpy texture that adds a little pop to a basic beanie.
The same fun texture you see here is shown in the Cobblestone Beanie that uses #3 DK weight yarn. It has a bit of a slouch and is great for cooler fall or spring weather.
Let’s jump right into the free crochet kids hat pattern.

Herringbone Half Double Crochet (hbhdc): YO, insert hook, YO and pull through stitch and one loop on the hook, YO pull through the last 2 loops on the hook.
Pattern Notes
At the end of each round join using the no-cut join method. Join to the first stitch of the round, not the chain. Work the first stitch of the round in the same stitch you joined to. You can also choose not to join at the end of each round and work the hat in a spiral to avoid the seam.
