This free crochet slouchy beanie pattern comes in 7 sizes, baby-men's adult. The lightweight beanie is great for chilly back to school mornings.
Chunky yarn is usually my go-to for hats, but my kids needed a lightweight beanie. The winter crochet hats were too warm. The crochet slouchy beanie pattern is just what they need for chilly back to school mornings. The cobblestone beanie will be your kid’s favorite.
The Texture
I love the bumpy texture of the knit seed stitch. It’s so stretchy and has a classic look. The herringbone half double crochet stitch is the closest I’ve seen to the seed stitch. Typically to create the herringbone design you work back and forth in rows. When this stitch is worked in the round, all going the same direction, you get the bumpy stitches.
If you love this texture but want to use a thicker yarn check out The Chunky Cobblestone Beanie Pattern.
You can make this basic crochet beanie for the whole family. The free crochet pattern comes in 7 sizes, from 0-3 months all the way to men’s adult. There aren’t many men’s crochet patterns out there. I’ve only made my husband 1 hat in the whole time I’ve been crocheting.
He was happy as pie when I asked him to pick a color for his new beanie. The excitement died down when I asked him to model it 😉
The Yarn
The blue ombre yarn is from the KnitCrate monthly yarn subscription box. If you haven’t tried it yet you should! It’s so fun to get happy mail that’s a surprise. Knitcrate is a great way to start trying higher end yarns at an affordable price.
The yarn is hand dyed on super soft merino wool. The ombre effect is beautiful and you don’t have a ton of ends to weave in. Under the tips section below you can see how to wind this yarn so the colors are in the order you like.
Because the herringbone stitches are slanted your seam will be diagonal. You can use the no-cut join method for an almost invisible seam. Or you can work this hat in a continuous spiral without joining at the end of each round. For more info on crocheting in the round check out this free guide.
What You Need
- #3 DK Weight Yarn: 1 Skein of Audine Wools by Knitcrate Superwash DK in the color Endless Sky. (236yds/4oz per skein) (Men and women sizes will need 2 skeins)
- Yarn Substitute: Lion Brand Flikka Yarn
- Cloudborn Superwash Merino Worsted Twist in the color Moss. This is the yarn used in the Men’s beanie. It’s a light #4 yarn and the gauge came out the same.
- I/9-5.5mm Crochet Hook
Gauge
16 hbhdc x 14 rows = 4” square (Learn all about gauge here)
Cobblestone Beanie Tips
- The slouchy style beanie is worked from the top down in the round.
- When you wind this yarn into a ball, the color that you start winding with will be the color of the bottom of your hat. I started winding with the light blue.
- Make your pom pom before you start crocheting to have the ombre look.
- At the end of each round join using the no-cut join method. Join to the first stitch of the round, not the chain. Work the first stitch of the round in the same stitch you joined too. Because of the stitches, the seam makes a prominent diagonal. You can also choose not to join at the end of each round and work the hat in a spiral to avoid the seam.
Special Stitches
Herringbone Half Double Crochet (hbhdc): YO, insert hook, YO and pull through the stitch and one loop on the hook, YO pull through the last 2 loops on the hook.

Hey Cynthia, lovely work! I’m trying the beanie in a men’s size. I’ve completed row 10 and the width measures 7.5inches…. but your guide says width should be 10inch… my gauge seems wrong. Please help.
Hi Sierra. Such a versatile slouchy beanie pattern. It’s so gorgeous! Thanks for sharing. I know our readers will love it. I’ve included it in our latest craft inspiration roundup for back to school crafts. https://craftylikegranny.com/back-to-school-crafts/ Cheers Jodie 🙂
Hi Jodie,
Thank you so much for including this in your roundup! I’m honored. I love all the ideas you shared for back to school crafts.
Stay cozy,

I have 2 skeins of Red Heart Chic Sheep Merino wool yarn can I use this for this pattern? Thanks for the reply!
Hi Cynthia, I haven’t used this yarn before but it looks so soft! Looking at the information, it is thicker than the DK weight yarn used in the pattern. If you are really set on using this yarn I’d follow the instructions for 1 size smaller than you want. For example if you want to make a womens size beanie follow the pattern for the kids 4-8. I’m not 100% sure it will be the same size but you can give it a try. I hope this helps!
