Knit look crochet stitch video tutorial that uses basic crochet stitches you already know

The first time I picked up a crochet hook I was pregnant. Emotions flooded my heart with the thought of being a mom, pure joy, complete fear, and excitement to make him his first hat. I chose crochet because the stitches have a distinct look and texture, which I love. But, sometimes I just want the look of knit stitches without using 2 needles.

Here’s The Secret

I love using basic stitches to create a different texture. This stitch is worked up using only half double crochets (hdc) but with 1 little twist.  When you work the center hdc you insert your hook into the legs of the stitch instead of under the traditional loops. More on this in a minute.

I’m calling this stitch the center half double crochet stitch. If you have worked with the center single crochet stitch before you know it’s a tight stitch. If you haven’t, here’s a video tutorial for the center single crochet stitch and a hat pattern. Substitute the single crochet with a half double crochet and you get the center hdc, a tight stitch that creates a sturdy fabric. If you want to crochet a bag, basket, or other home decor projects this stitch will fit the bill.

If you know this stitch by another name let me know. I’d love to use the proper name. How many versions of the grit stitch are out there?

How To Make a Knit Look Crochet Stitch

  1. Start with any number of chains and 1 row of basic hdc. At the end of the row, turn and ch 1
  2. To work your first center hdc st. Yarn over, insert your hook into the legs of the stitch (looks like a “V”), yarn over, pull through stitch, wiggle your hook to loosen this loop, yarn over and pull through all 3 loops on the hook.
  3. Repeat the center hdc until you get to the end of the row.

Things You Should Know

  • The center hdc is a tight stitch: The stitch would be beautiful in a garment. To achieve a better drape go up a couple hook sizes and keep your tension loose.
  • Working in the round: At the end of each round join using the no-cut join method to avoid a large seam and keep your “V’s” straight.
  • Reversible: The center hdc is the same on both sides.
  • Sturdy fabric: Perfect for bags, baskets and home decor projects.

Whether you know how to knit or not, you can use this technique to create a knit look crochet stitch for a quick project. I have a wall hanging on my hook featuring this stitch. I can’t wait to share it with you soon.
